Shanghai: Xia Fa Ji Restaurant

Weak from hunger and jet lag, Xia Fa Ji Restaurant was our salvation at the end of a 14 hour flight to the other side of the world. We have to admit, the framed photo of, presumably, the restaurant’s owner shaking hands with actor and director Stephen Chow (Kung Fu Hustle, God of Cookery), immediately inspired a sense of confidence, and we were not disappointed.

Being slungry (“slungry” being the dreaded, ineffectual mix of sleepiness and hunger) in a strange city can be a serious challenge, especially when that city is clocking in at 85% humidity, you have been awake for well over 24 hours, and every corner is occupied with exciting, unfamiliar, fragrant, and occasionally alarming street food.

Despite the aforementioned temptations, all we wanted on our first night in Shanghai was an air-conditioned place to sit and enjoy dinner before passing out back at the hotel and Xia Fa Ji turned out to be the perfect oasis of cool air, clean, pleasant decor and consistently excellent food. Everything we tried on the menu was delicious, the portions are generous and the prices are very reasonable.

Here’s a list of some of the dishes we ordered – and highly recommend – during our two (this place was so good, we had to return!) visits:

  • Chinese fresh-squeezed pear juice
  • Pickled radish
  • Shrimp wonton in broth
  • Fried eggplant w/ pork
  • Mushroom soup
  • Peppered short ribs w/ pumpkin [The short ribs are a bit salty, but the pumpkin balances this out]
  • Spinach and bean curd
  • Mapo tofu
  • Duck soup w/ tofu and bok choy
  • Shanghai Hi-Story liquor
